Presbyterian & Reformed
599 listed in North Carolina. What they believe, and what a service is actually like.
The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is the largest Presbyterian body in the United States and the mainline one — formed in 1983 when the northern and southern streams reunited after the split of the Civil War. Congregations are governed by elected elders in a session, grouped into presbyteries, and it is a connectional church: a PCUSA congregation belongs to a wider body that ordains its ministers and holds its property in trust. In North Carolina it is the Presbyterian church most towns have had the longest.
The most common Presbyterian mix-up, and the difference is real. The PCA separated in 1973 and is confessional and conservative: it requires officers to affirm the Westminster Standards and ordains only men. The PCUSA holds a broader range of theological views, ordains women and LGBTQ people, and treats its confessions as a chorus rather than a single test. Same polity, same name, genuinely different churches — the abbreviation on the sign is the fastest way to tell.
Both formed from congregations that left the PCUSA — the EPC in 1981, ECO in 2012 — generally over theological direction and ordination standards. They are more conservative than the PCUSA and more flexible than the PCA. A church that changed affiliation in the last fifteen years often still looks identical from the road.
The ARP is a separate Southern denomination with its own history and seminary; Cumberland Presbyterians split in 1810 over frontier ordination requirements and Calvinist doctrine. Neither is a branch of the PCUSA.
No. They are separate denominations with different convictions about Scripture, ordination, and confessional subscription. Check the sign or the church's website — the abbreviation is usually stated plainly.
Yes. PCUSA congregations practise an open table; anyone who wishes to receive is welcome, member or not.
Yes. Infants of members are baptised, and adults who come to faith are baptised too. A baptism performed in another Christian tradition is recognised and not repeated.
The denomination is broad, so congregations differ more than the label suggests. The clearest signals are the worship style listed on their site and whether they name a stance on ordination.
