A Southern Baptist church is an independent congregation that cooperates with the Southern Baptist Convention, the largest Protestant body in the United States and the most common kind of church in North Carolina. Each congregation owns its own building, calls its own pastor, and votes on its own decisions — the Convention is a partnership for missions and seminaries, not a chain of command.

What to expect if you’ve never been

One main Sunday morning service, typically 60 to 90 minutes, often with a second earlier or later service in larger churches.
A sermon of 30 to 45 minutes that works through a Bible passage. This is the centre of the service, not a segment of it.
Music that ranges from hymns with a piano and choir to a full contemporary band, depending entirely on the individual church. Two Southern Baptist churches in the same town can feel completely different.
An invitation at the end of the service to come forward, speak with someone, or make a decision. Nobody will make you.
Sunday school or small groups before or after the service, usually by age.
Casual to smart-casual dress in most congregations. Traditional churches skew dressier.

What Southern Baptist churches believe

The Bible is the final authority for faith and practice.
Baptism is by full immersion, and only for people old enough to profess faith for themselves — infants are dedicated, not baptised.
The Lord's Supper (communion) is a symbolic memorial, observed periodically rather than weekly.
Each local congregation governs itself. There is no bishop and no regional body with authority over the church.
Salvation is by grace through faith in Christ, received personally.

Southern Baptist vs. Independent Baptist

Independent Baptist churches cooperate with no convention at all, and tend to be more traditional in dress, music, and Bible translation. A Southern Baptist church gives to the Cooperative Program; an Independent Baptist church supports missionaries directly.

Southern Baptist vs. Cooperative Baptist Fellowship

The CBF formed in 1991 out of a long conflict within the SBC. CBF churches generally ordain women as pastors; SBC churches generally do not. Some North Carolina congregations give to both.

Southern Baptist vs. National Baptist

The National Baptist conventions are historically Black Baptist bodies with their own conventions, worship traditions, and structures. The theology overlaps substantially; the history and the culture are distinct.

Common questions

Do I have to be baptised to attend?

No. Anyone can attend any service. Baptism and church membership are separate decisions you make later, if you want to.

Will I be asked to give money?

An offering is collected during most services, usually by passing a plate or pointing to a box at the back. Visitors are not expected to give and nobody tracks who does.
